IoT for HVAC systems

Heating and ventilation account for a large share of a building’s operating costs. Fine tuning these systems is one of the fastest ways to improve net operating income. But today’s HVAC systems (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) are complex. They require continuous monitoring and adjustment based on weather forecasts and energy prices.

Sending a building technician on site to manually adjust a heating curve is a thing of the past. Today, control should be digital. But for that to work, you need a link between the substation and the cloud that never fails.

The challenge: the plant room in the basement

Heat substations and ventilation rooms are rarely placed with mobile coverage in mind. They are often located deep in basements behind thick concrete walls and steel doors. Using a standard SIM from a single operator is a recipe for problems here. If that operator has weak coverage in that exact spot, you lose control.

Advisera’s solution is built on roaming. Our SIM cards are operator independent. That means the equipment in the basement automatically connects to the strongest available signal, whether it comes from Telia, Tele2, Telenor, or Tre. This provides the best possible chance of connectivity even in the most challenging environments.

Protect yourself from runaway data costs

A modern building management and control system can generate large amounts of data, especially if it starts downloading updates or if a configuration ends up in a loop. With standard subscriptions, you often discover this only when the invoice arrives. By then, it is too late.

With Cisco IoT Control Center, you can set automatic caps. If a substation suddenly starts consuming more data than normal, you receive an alert and the connection can be throttled automatically. You get full cost control down to each individual device.

From reactive to predictive maintenance

With stable connectivity, you can start working with predictive maintenance. Sensors can warn you if a ventilation filter is getting clogged or if pressure in the heating system drops. You can schedule a replacement the next time a technician is in the area instead of making an emergency callout when tenants complain about the cold.

Frequently asked questions about connected HVAC (FAQ)

Can I connect older control systems?

Yes, often via a gateway. This “translates” signals from the legacy system and sends them via 4G/5G to the cloud. It allows you to modernize older buildings without replacing the entire heating system.

How do I prevent unauthorized changes to temperature settings?

Security is essential. We always recommend using private APNs and VPN tunnels. This keeps your HVAC equipment invisible to the public internet and reachable only by authorized staff through secure channels.

How much data does a substation use?

It varies widely, but pure telemetry uses very little data, often just a few megabytes per month. Remote software updates require larger data packages. In our portal, you can easily switch data plans in real time as needed.
