IoT for Elevators
The elevator is the heart of a building. It transports people and goods around the clock. But for property owners and service companies, the elevator is often a source of worry and unexpected costs. Traditionally, elevators have been “black boxes” that only communicate when something has already broken down. Or worse: when a passenger presses the emergency button and no one answers.
IoT (the Internet of Things) has changed the game. But it is not enough to just insert a SIM card and hope for the best. Requirements for security and uptime demand professional grade infrastructure.
The urgent challenge: 2G and 3G are being phased out
Right now, the elevator industry is facing its biggest technical shift in decades. The legacy 2G and 3G networks, which the majority of Sweden’s elevator emergency alarms rely on, are being retired. If your elevator equipment is not ready for 4G and VoLTE (Voice over LTE), emergency phones risk going silent.
This is not just a technical detail. It is a safety issue and a legal requirement. At Advisera, we help property owners navigate this transition smoothly. With our future proof SIM cards, we ensure that voice connectivity will work in tomorrow’s networks as well.
From reactive to proactive with Cisco IoT Control Center
Managing ten elevators manually might be doable. Managing a thousand requires a system. By using our platform, built on Cisco’s world leading technology, you gain a complete overview that used to be available only to global elevator manufacturers.
With Cisco IoT Control Center, you get:
- Real time status: See immediately if an elevator loses connectivity. You know about it before the tenant has time to report a fault.
- Remote diagnostics: In many cases, a simple restart of the connection solves the problem. Do it directly from the portal and save the cost of sending out a technician.
- Real security: Elevator data should not travel over the open internet. We offer private APN and VPN solutions that keep unauthorized access out.
The economics of connected elevators
The real value lies in predictive maintenance. By analyzing data on vibrations, door cycles, and temperature, you can anticipate component failures before an elevator stops. That turns urgent, expensive repairs into planned, cost effective service visits.
We do not sell the elevator or the sensor itself. We deliver the digital highway that makes sure the data gets through, securely and reliably. Whether you have five elevators or five thousand, we give you the tools to take control.
Frequently asked questions about elevator connectivity (FAQ)
What happens to the elevator emergency alarm when 2G/3G is switched off?
If the alarm does not support 4G/VoLTE, it will stop working. That means the emergency button will not connect any call. It is urgent to inventory and upgrade these units now.
Does coverage work inside elevator shafts?
Elevator shafts are often built with concrete and steel, which weakens radio signals. Our roaming SIM cards automatically select the operator (Telia, Tele2, Telenor, or Tre) with the strongest signal where the elevator is, even deep down in basement levels.
Can I see data usage for each elevator?
Yes. In our Cisco portal you can see exact data usage in real time. You can also set limits so you never get unexpected costs if a device starts behaving incorrectly.
